How to Find a Lost Car Key

Losing your car key is a nightmare scenario. It can cause panic, especially if you are running late to pick up a takeaway pizza or are trying to get home in time for your favorite show. It’s easy to lose things when you’re stressed or distracted.

The good news is that it’s often pretty easy to find your lost car key again. You just need to follow a few simple steps to retrace your steps, be patient and keep searching until you do find them.

If your keys are in the ignition, you will be able to hear them beep or be thrown against the car if they are in a nearby pocket. You should also check your coats and bags thoroughly, especially if you’ve recently used them. You may be surprised to find your lost car key in a bag or jacket you thought was empty.

If your keys are traditional car keys without a fob, then you can buy a replacement at a dealership or a specialist auto locksmith. A dealership will be able to program the new key to your car’s specific model and can disable the old one so that it can’t be stolen. However, this method can be expensive and it can also be slow. Using a specialist automotive locksmith can be much faster and more cost effective but you will need to have your vehicle’s log book (V5C) or a clear photo of your driving licence with you in order to prove ownership.
