In the Neolithic period, people settle in the area around today’s city of Hattingen. The first settlements are found on the ridges above the river valley. The settlers are called Hattuarians and are later called Saxons.

The Protestant Reformation gains popularity in the Hattingen region. The first guilds are established. The town gains the right to hold weekly markets and fairs. Hattingen also joins the Hanseatic League. The city is heavily fortified with walls and defensive towers. It acquires five city gates and gets the privilege to hold three fairs a year.

During the Industrial Revolution, Hattingen becomes one of the most important coal cities. In 1720, there were 52 active coal mines in the Hattingen district.

A number of people lost their lives in the Great War, including many citizens from the Hattingen region. In 1918, the Allied forces defeat the Wehrmacht. Among the victims are 5674 inhabitants of Hattingen.

After the end of World War II, a new era begins. The old boroughs of Blankenstein, Bredenscheid-Stuter, Niederelfringhausen and Oberstuter are merged into the community of Hattingen. The city of Hattingen itself spreads over 71 qkm with 60,490 inhabitants.

Hattingen belongs to the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Historische Stadtkerne in Nordrhein-Westfalen” (association of historical city centres in North Rhine-Westphalia). In 1999, the community of Hattingen was joined by the communities of Welper and Bruch.

The city of Hattingen has been included in the “Westfalischer Hansebund” since 2015. This community wants to revive the medieval Hanseatic traditions.

The town faces the challenge of structural change. In addition to modern companies and businesses, the city also aims at attracting more tourists. With the new Reshop-Carre shopping mall, which has a size of over 11,500 square meters and over 30 shops for clothing, hardware and electronics, the city achieves this goal. Also the popular Henrichshutte museum and the city festival attract many visitors.
