League of Legends Lecture

League of Legends is a complex video game with over 100 million active players, a large and vibrant esports scene, and a wide roster of champions to master. It’s also one of the most acclaimed multiplayer games ever created. And yet, despite its popularity and complexity, many League players struggle to improve their gameplay.

In this class, we will explore and analyze League of Legends, a cultural phenomenon and popular video game, through various lenses including eSports, psychology, and game design. Students will learn to critically think about League of Legends and improve their own gameplay through weekly homework assignments.

The first step to improving at any game is understanding its fundamentals. Much like learning chess or volleyball, it is important to understand the basic rules and strategies before diving into more complicated openings and tactics. It is common for League of Legends players to skip this step and jump straight into spamming solo queue hoping that will magically improve their skills. This approach is ineffective and often leads to players repeating bad habits without realizing they are doing so.
